Nicolas Frois - Music of the forest

Music of the Forest is a mobile app that allows you to create audio-visual collages using a collection of elements from the flora and fauna native to southern Chile.

This app was developed for a group of educators living in southern Chile. They visit different rural educational establishments and use the app to generate activities focused on their natural environment, music, and visual arts.

Music of the Forest features different collections of natural elements that include representative sounds. These elements can be scaled, rotated, and positioned on the screen, all of which modifies the sound coming from the elements, varying their pitch, pan, and volume.

An interesting design problem:

The app's interactions are very similar to those offered by content creation apps like Instagram. This way, users don't need to learn new interactions, making it more intuitive to use. While I largely supported the design of the app's interactions, my main contribution to this project was leading the software development process, creating the software architecture, finding solutions for memory management due to the large file sizes, and organizing the team to complete the development of the different systems that work together to deliver the intended experience.

All the artwork, both audio and visual, was developed alongside the educators and the rest of the development team.

The app also has the option to store and share your creations, this was an early design decision, so it was planned from the beginning, this consideration was essential for a smooth development process.

Our clients, educators living in the south, continue to use the app to create various workshops. For my this is proof that the design and implementation of the experience was successful, met expectations and even influenced access to artistic education in rural communities.
